What is Couch to 5K?
This is a 10-week running programme, designed for beginners to gradually build up their running ability so they eventually run 5km without stopping. The Couch to 5K is a great way to get fit and meet friends. Transition Year students can also use it in towards achieving the Gaisce Award as part of the Physical Recreation requirement.
The Couch to 5K is very popular amongst our students and staff. Not only is it a great form of exercise, it also gives us time to get out in the fresh air and take in the beauty of the Killarney National Park.
Couch to 5K Training
The training programme starts with a mix of running and walking to gradually build up fitness and stamina. Week 1 involves running for just a minute, this creates realistic expectations and makes the challenge feel achievable right from the very start. The 9 weeks that follow, involve a different schedule, helping to building up one’s running ability each week. Training takes place at Killarney running track and the National Park.
